Research interests
I
am a member of the section User-Centred
Engineering of the Department "Technology Management". Trained
psycholinguist, I got involved in research concerning the contribution of prosodic
characteristics to language comprehension. Then, I gradually moved into
research on on modelling prosody for speech synthesis.
Currently,
my research interests concentrate on the application of speech i/o in
man-machine interaction, both for speech-only and multi-modal applications.
I'm interested both in analytical issues (conducting research aiming to
acquire insights in human communication) and in synthetic issues (using this
knowledge to develop interfaces). Questions that arise are the following:
- What
constraints need to be satisfied in order to make interaction by spoken
language useful in particular contexts?
- How
can speech be combined with other modalities in order to improve
man-machine interaction. For instance, what kind of information should
be transmitted by speech and what kind of information by other
modalities; how can speech be combined with other modalities (pointing
by the user, highlighting by the system)?
- How
can we apply speech interaction in order to reduce the dependency of the
user on traditional screen-keyboard-mouse (WIMP) interfaces.
- A
more technical interest concerns variation of speaking styles. This
subject is one of the themes in COST258,
Naturalness of Synthetic Speech.
A further interest concerns dialogue modelling, and the
relation between discourse structure and prosody, both in monologue and
dialogue.
